Function of the Department The primary function of a district department of health and family welfare is to provide comprehensive healthcare services, including infrastructure, manpower, and logistics, to all residents within the district, especially in rural areas and for vulnerable populations. This includes implementing national health programs and managing both communicable and non-communicable diseases.

1. Providing Healthcare Infrastructure - Establishing and maintaining a network of health facilities such as district hospitals, CHCs, PHCs, HWCs, and sub-centers.
- Ensuring adequate staffing with doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals.
- Providing equipment and supplies for effective service delivery.

2. Implementing National Health Programs - Managing programs focused on communicable and non-communicable diseases.
- Implementing reproductive and child health initiatives.
- Addressing cancer, diabetes, hypertension, etc.

3. Ensuring Universal Access to Healthcare - Equitable, affordable, and quality healthcare access.
- Restructuring delivery mechanisms to improve rural accessibility.

4. Supporting Medical Education & Training - Providing training for medical professionals.
- Running ANM/FHW training schools and nursing institutions.

 5. Managing & Coordinating Health Programs - Through District Health Society (DHS).
- Coordination among government bodies.
- Collaboration with local governance and stakeholders.

6. Other Important Functions - Food and health-related inspections.
- Vaccination programs.
- Free STD & HIV testing.
- Tobacco cessation and enforcement programs.
