Function of the Department | |
The Mon Forest Division operates under the Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change of Nagaland. Established in 1967, it has Range Offices in Namsa, Longshen, Mon, Naginimora, Tobu and Beat Offices in Aboi and Longching. The DFO office manages budget estimates, expenditure reports, and compliance audits while ensuring financial transactions align with government regulations. It also processes permits for Timber and Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP). |
a) Forest Conservation and Management | |
• Movement of logs and timber through Working Schemes and Tree Farm registrations, and sustainable management of forest resources like stone mining and NTFP resources. • Protection and conservation including reserved and community forests. • Enforcement of forest conservation laws including Indian Forest Act, 1927, and Nagaland Forest Act. • Prevention of illegal logging, encroachment, and poaching. • Nursery Management. |

b) Biodiversity Conservation | |
• Preservation of flora and fauna, especially in ecologically sensitive zones. • Management of protected and purchased areas within Mon division. • Restoration of degraded forest lands through afforestation and reforestation programs. |

c) Community Engagement and Joint Forest Management (JFM) | |
• Partnering with local communities through Joint Forest Management Committees (JFMCs). • Promotion of traditional ecological knowledge and community-led conservation practices. • Conducting awareness programs on forest and wildlife conservation. |
d) Forest Fire Management | |
• Prevention, detection, and control of forest fires. • Training of local communities in forest fire prevention techniques and early warning systems. • Implementation of works under Forest Fire Prevention and Management Scheme through Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) funding. |

e) Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP) | |
• Execution, monitoring, and supervision of activities related to community forests. • Promoting livelihood initiatives for Self Help Group (SHG) communities in selected NFMP villages. • Capacity building of forest staff through regular training and workshops. |
